Like a diamond, The Background presents many facets within every passing song. At times, the music can be passionate, intense, heartfelt, sorrowful or any emotion in between. The band conveys diversity within an umbrella of style; a style forged over months of trial and error. The Background delivers an honest sound that draws inspiration from a diverse blend of pop, blues, and rock. A unique blend of enigma, warmth, and soaring melodies compliment truthful lyrics that find a bond in between the listener's heart and ears.
The Background formed in the fall of 2004 and their debut EP, Stepping Into Traffic, was recorded in the spring of 2005 at The Door (Dallas). Not long after they were signed to Dallas-based Third String Records and released a sophomore EP titled Today is the Tomorrow We Worried About Yesterday in winter of 2005. Since then, they have been touring, writing, and creating a name for themselves. They have played/toured with acts such as Eisley, Number One Fan, Bowling For Soup, Lydia, Near Miss, The Scene Aesthetic, Danger Radio, Terminal, A Day At the Fair, Hit the Lights, Nude, and Madison. In addition, they have shot a video for the single "Keep On" (which has been played on college, internet, and local radio stations across the nation as well as Canada, England and Japan); received attention from national press and labels, including signings to Access Management and Field Day Records; and obtained a handful of clothing and instrument endorsements.
In August of 2006, The Background added two new members. It marked the first time in the band's history that they had a three guitar sound. However, later in the year the group broke up. Shaun Gunnels went on to join The Miles Casting.
