In 1987, Josh Alan Friedman sold his soul to the devil at the Crossroads of the World (Broadway & 42nd Street) and moved to Texas. There he barnstormed the state, earning the sobriquet "Josh Alan, Czar of Atomic Acoustic Guitar." He won three Dallas Observer Music Awards for Best Acoustic Act, and rocked whole arenas with his Guild D-40, opening for such acts as Johnny Winter, Bad Company, War, Huey Lewis & the News, Marianne Faithful, John Hammond, Mitch Ryder, Lonnie Mack, Gatemouth Brown and Koko Taylor. Guitar trademarks include acoustic feedback, surf instrumentals and an acoustic medley of Black exploitation movie soundtracks.
Josh released three acoustic CDs to unanimous raves: Famous & Poor, The Worst! (a musical about Ed Wood, performed at the National Film Theatre in London) and Blacks 'n' Jews (the title of which is now a new documentary on Josh's life). The Josh Alan Band, his fourth album from 2001, showcases his electric blues quartet. The CD debuts the unreleased Leiber & Stoller song, "Strike A Match," written for Howlin' Wolf in 1955, then "lost." Sax legend Fathead Newman and Miles Davis' organist Bernard Wright guest on the CD. Josh has produced, recorded and/or performed with Keb' Mo', Grandmaster Flash, Kinky Friedman, Bugs Henderson, John Hammond, Cafe Noir, Trout Fishing in America, Sara Hickman and dozens of Texas bluesmen.
