Sol Kitchen started out in 2002 as a trio consisting of Carlos on sax, gar4ett on hand percussion, and DJ Kobe on the wheels of steel. It has since grown to an eleven person lineup of close-knit funk junkies, most of which show up for every gig.
Originally, Sol Kitchen began as a way for professional musicians, already involved in other projects, to let off some steam and try out new ideas in a non-threatening environment. Now, for most members, this is the only formal group that they are involved in.
Sol Kitchen improvises about 99.99999% of a show, covering a standard every now and then for posterity. They never - NEVER - practice as a group. They try and keep it as nonscripted as possible and really push the limits of improvisation. That keeps it entertaining to not only the audience, but the band members as well.
The original name "Sol Kitchen" came from Cantina del Sol, the first venue to feature the group on a regular basis. After the gig, band members and close friends would swap brain cells with each other in the kitchen. Sometime around mid 2004, Sol Kitchen began to change the name of the group for every show, usually making references to bodily fluids and wildlife. As of January 2006, the band has gone by its original name.
