Weekend Roundup

Keep It Country

Published: March 3, 2006

Here's your country and your alt-country Weekend Roundup.

Checking the schedule you'll notice a couple of impressive, country-fried youngsters playing in town Friday night: Josh Owen (with non-teenager Roger Creager) at The Horseman and Maren Morris at Fred’s Texas Café.

Jack Ingram is helping Josh out on his upcoming CD, which is what we in the trade say is “kind of cool.” Yeah, other people say that. I’m just playing the role of someone who thinks he is in a trade that people will be impressed with, but when it comes down to it they are not.

Not sure of the fun-ness of a Josh show? Check out this message from the board on his site a while back: "YOU GUYS ARE BAD ASS,YOU KICK SOME ASS ON STAGE.SOME TEXAS ASS BABY!!!!WE ARE VERY IMPRESSED WITH YOU GUYS.ANYTIME WE SPILL BEER ALL OVER OURSELVES, PISS ON OURSELF AND GET THROWN OUT BY THE COPS, WE HAD A DAM GOOD TIME."

Ummm, yeah. I doubt Josh champions urination in that way. But you get the idea.

Maren is 15 for pete’s sake and has already shared the stage with, who we in the trade like to say “the aforementioned Mr. Ingram,” plus Marty Stuart and the Bellamy Brothers. I don’t want to brag, but at age 15 I was playing basketball against a poorly pixilated Dr. J and Larry Bird.

Doug Moreland, Mr. Chainsaw Award Winner, will be at Love and War in Grapevine on Saturday. Bring a big stump, I’m sure he’d love that.

Also Saturday, Johnny Lee’s going to be looking for love at the place they were looking for it back in 1980 (Sort of – hell, you know what I mean.)

Don’t forget the Argyle Bluegrass Festival Saturday and Sunday. This is the third incredible big bluegrass event in recent weeks, following the Southwest Bluegrass Club’s winter show and Dr. Ralph Stanley at the Granada the other night.

Killer bluegrassers Cadillac Sky will not be at Argyle, but they will be playing twice Saturday: First at the Texas Independence Day event at Sons of Hermann, then in Denton later that night.

By the way, Cadillac fiddler Ross Holmes is selling a very cool fiddle. From the note from the band's MySpace page: "This particular instrument has been with me for 3 years and has been played in the Ryman Auditorium, Grand Ole Opry, CMA and ACM award shows, The Station Inn, many famous venues and concert halls, in front of 20,000 screaming fans and in my living room, on both Cadillac Sky records and many other artists' projects. It has truly been a wonderful friend, but I've outgrown it and have recently aquired a new instrument. If anyone is interested, e-mail me at ross@cadillacsky.net for more info, price, etc. The fiddle will include a Bobelock case and insurance appraisal, plus a handwritten letter from me that states that I was the previous owner. I hope that a true Cadillac Sky fan will aquire this wonderful instrument and enjoy it for many years."

The Front Porch with Justin Frazell on 99.5 The Wolf (every Sunday, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.) this week welcomes Stoney LaRue and Bonnie Bishop. Mr. Frazell's says he’s also got something special cooked up for the show that night.

Brandon Rhyder, Walt Wilkins and Susan Gibson stop by the 95.9 Ranch Roadhouse (live from Billy Bob's Sundays 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) with John Muzyka.

HOLY COW! I have not seen that game in years. I believe I still have it with my Commodore 64 in the closet. Man, those were the days of "No bills"...

Yeah, man, I emailed one of my friends who used to play that game and he freaked out. Ah, the good ol days.

I can most definitely recommend Maren Morris! And don't forget Deadman is performing with James McMurtry at Sons and they are freakin' AMAZING!
