First PegNews community team trivia night Tuesday

Square Pegs

Published: June 29, 2008

Just a reminder (or an announcement, for those not following the comment threads) that this Tuesday night will be the first outing for our Bloodsport Trivia team. All PegNews staff and community are welcome.

Politically incorrect team name suggestions? Post 'em in the comments below. I'll buy the winner's first round.

How PiC are we talking here, Miko? At the Tuesday trivia for Flying Saucer, we've been known to cross lines that really shouldn't even exist.

For instance, Sean Taylor was killed the morning of Tuesday, November 27 (2007). That same night, our team name was "Lesson learned: Don't bring a machete to a home-invasion gun fight."

Speaking of...Heath Ledger died on a Monday. I'll spot you 3 guesses as to our team name topic the following day.

IJS, might want to set some ground rules here - especially with PN's known sensitivity to shameless post-mortem humor.

And damn that Chad Jones for beating me to the punch!

I dig PegasusJews, btw.

I submit...

Dallas SWAT jerks, damn insurance companies, intertron granny, sexy duck cougar, web acronyms (IANAL btw), drug/terror/cancer war, I'm rubber and you're glue, tinfoil dunce hat, is my alarm alarming effectively?, paint brush in the ice cream.

That's just from the one thread, fyi. I'm not sure whether it'd be longer or more concise if I wanted that to be a digest version of the site.

I recognized the thread, Scott Doyle, who couldn't. I was trying to avoid calling attention to it...so I didn't pinpoint. Instead I took the brush outta the icecream (ewww!) and broadly painted in PegNews.

If we call ourselves "Brutal Dildos", I already have a team shirt.

Which I'm wearing regardless of team name.

Scott Doyle Verified

I fully support the wearing of said shirt, but since it's already a band's name...methinks it's not the best team name.

I'd be happy to write mine out if it means a free beer, but I probably won't be there right at the start due to softball so I volunteer Pavel if that's what we run with.

A) I suggest "Lawrence vs Texas" B) That's Canada Day C) Does Pavel have one of the "Nymphomaniac Search and Rescue" shirts, too?

I'd have loved A) if this was happening a week ago. Still an awesome name, but it's like celebrating Christmas on December 30th. =(

Big fan of That's Canada Day, tbh...maybe with a bit of "It's aboot respect!" thrown in the mix:

Next scene, simply for hilarity (questionably NSFW, wouldn't test it):

Ah, yes, Canadian antics. Got married up there, yes we did.

I suppose you're right about the name. Maybe "Internet Bag Ladies Off Haldol" is the way to go.

In the spirit of trivia, Canada and same sex, uh, sex, identify this quote:

"The state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation"

Oh, googlers, it won't be there for you on the first!

Watch out if you have Canadians in your office today!

Ours are outside canadians, we just keep them in the back yard. They've got a doggie door if they get overheated or something.

First outing = Great Success!

Team "Sh*t without the mess" (a George Carlin homage, courtesy Laura S.) was in a hopeless position going into the final +/- 16 question. 10th place out of 24. 15 points out of the money.

Final question was to put the following cable channels in order of their premiere:

A&E

CSPAN

VH1

Weather Channel

(That's not the answer, but the order given.)

... and we won. Next month, we'll start the tab $40 ahead.

Struck me as an allegory for the whole PegNews experience: Hopelessly out of the game going into the crucial test and somehow pulling one out...

Congrats!

So what was the answer? My uncertain guess...

Weather Channel VH1 CSPAN A&E

Ah, fearless leader sells the team short -- we were in ELEVENTH place going into the final, not tenth. He also sells himself short -- he was mostly responsible for the final answer that secured our underdog victory.

Of course, such dramatic redemptions would be unnecessary if we could just find someone with a working knowledge of sports trivia . . .

jtmbls, iirc the answer is CSPAN, Weather Channel, A&E, VH1.

I'd like to think my late showing was Miko's inspiration (honestly just hoping I get a beer out of the $40 tab).

My fears were confirmed, though. Drinks are crazy overpriced (for a Tuesday) and I was only there for about 45 mins. Also, don't look at me for a sports guru just b/c I showed up in a jersey - I know some, but if it's before 1990 odds are I'm blindly guessing just like the rest of you.

Pavel and I decided to try a new spot, found the Barley House off Greenville & Yale which we'll definitely be going back to. $2 for any pint on Tuesdays, and a pretty good selection. Really dug the atmosphere...can't pinpoint that one other than it was comfy.

Well, if you needed sports trivia why didn't you just call xdavidwattsx!?

I'm going to bring in a window AC unit next time. It was hot. :(

We should also show up earlier, so we can snag a table up-front.

Are we doing this again tomorrow night, Miko? It's a bye week for softball so I can actually show up relatively on time.

Also, need to send one of your minions early to get a table.

I dunno... I was thinking about calling it, but I could be persuaded. We do have a $40 credit. Any other takers?

Free drinks? I'll be there!

Scott Doyle Verified

Uhh, what's the reason for calling it? Turnout from last time, or do you simply have better things to do than hang out with us coooooommon folk?

At the very least, we could blow through the $40 tab this week and then call it quits (unless we win again). Letting $40 of booze go to waste kills my hidden Hebrew, mang.

Meh-- More just looking at my super-booked calendar tomorrow. But you've inspired me. Game on.
