Gregory reportedly will get Meet the Press post

NBC will promote from within by naming David Gregory the new moderator of Meet the Press, says The Huffington Post.

Tom Brokaw supposedly will bow out as the late Tim Russert's interim replacement after this Sunday's scheduled interview with president-elect Barack Obama.

Gregory, 38, has been chief White House correspondent for NBC News during George W. Bush's presidency. He's been ubiquitous, too, filling in on Today, anchoring weekend editions of the NBC Nightly News and hosting MSNBC's Race For the White House, which became 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue after election day.

Ted Koppel's recent early evacuation from The Discovery Channel had fueled speculation that he might be angling for the Meet the Press position. But Koppel, 68, is the same age as Brokaw. And while at ABC News, he passed on an opportunity to join the network's This Week program, one of Meet the Press's three Sunday morning competitors.

Gregory is of an earlier generation and clearly doesn't lack the requisite ambition to become NBC News' hard-charging second-in-command, behind Nightly News anchor Brian Williams. If indeed he's the one, Gregory will have vaulted over veteran Andrea Mitchell and young gun political analyst Chuck Todd, both of whom reportedly were considered for the Meet the Press post along with frequent panelist Gwen Ifill of PBS.
