CARROLLTON After 3 1/2 years serving upscale authentic Mexican food, and being a trailblazer with tequilas and unusual fruit-flavored margaritas, Agave Azul Cocina y Tequileria surprised its customers in June by abruptly closing, without word or warning.
But the restaurant is resurfacing: It'll open next month in old Historic Carrollton downtown, at a new West-Village-style multi-use center being built at 1114 Elm Street.
"An opportunity came up in a brand new building -- it has three stories, with loft apartments on the 2nd and 3rd floor," says Agave Azul owner Zotico Reyes. "The landlord wanted me there. They're trying to rebirth that area."
It also fulfilled Reyes' need to increase his lunch crowd.
"I struggled for 3 1/2 years, and never had a lunch business at the Frankford location," he says. "I was making a living but that's not the reason you open a restaurant. It held me back, the lunches."
UPDATE: Goodness gracious, there's a lot of interest in this re-opening. According to spokesman Fernando Salazar, the restaurant will re-open at long last on Monday November 5. Salazar also brags on the new decor, describing it as a "hacienda" look.

I'm glad they didn't close for good. Agave Azul is such a hidden gem. I'm always shocked that more people don't know about them.
Their margarita's are without a doubt the best in the Dallas area, or possibly anywhere. Whenever I go to a restaurant, I rate their margarita's against Agave's.
The weekend dinner specials that usually include fresh fish are amazing - and at times are better than meals I've had at some of Dallas' top restaurants.
Now if only they'd open one closer to me near downtown Dallas....

My husband and I were very upset to see that they had closed their Frankford location; we would go about once a week. The food is original and the chef isn't afraid to try different specials. Of course the drinks are another selling point!! We cannot wait to check out the new location and the gracious staff; I have already started spreading the word.

The site looks great, but you should really really consider a redesign to move away from the "page as one big image map" concept. You'll miss out on a lot of opportunities otherwise.

I really love the website. It'll be great for Babe's Chicken Dinner House to have some south-of-the-border company. However, one minor quibble: I tried several times to join the mailing list using both the "mailing list" and "contact us" links and was unsuccessful.

I agree with Webra about a downtown Dallas location and just can't picture Agave Azul in Carrollton. But I hope they can make a go of it there.

David--The website will be improved as we move on. There will be more than the image map you see. There will be actual text that can be seen and not seen. The site will be optimized to the fullest extent. We will also add, music, flash, Photos, and much more.

well they still use Centenario for their margaritas, which works very well. The rest of the margarita was a bit boring, kinda wonder how much lime juice they actually put in there. But their signature dish (shrimp in cream sauce) was very good and they have a great chipotle salsa (green's not bad either). Very friendly service too.

Luniz, thanks for the update. Lets hope the reported service gaffes are a thing of the past. Website update: I am happy to report that although the "mailing list" option still does not work, the "contact us" option on the Agave Azul website http://www.theagaveazul.com is now functional. You can join the mailing list from this option by checking the "Join mailing list" box. I'm looking forward to great promos in my email soon!!!
