DALLAS FrontBurner says Samba Room, the Latin restaurant on Travis Walk, has closed.
The restaurant helped spearhead a Latin trend that's still resonating in the form of Cuba Libre and La Duni, and in the acceptance of the cuisine in restaurants such as Stephan Pyles and the opening-soon Alo. It's a small chain with branches in Houston, Denver, and Florida.
According to folks who don't want to be quoted, the space has been taken over by Robert Colombo, owner of Trece, right across the street. According to other folks who don't want to be quoted, it'll be a restaurant serving Italian food, although "nothing's set in stone" yet.

No surprise here. Samba Room was great for a while after it opened up. But after some ownership changes, it became overly-corporate in feel and quite bad, bearing no resemblance to its original incarnation. I ate there about a year ago and it was one of the worst meals I've had in a long time. It was telling too that it was a Saturday night and the place was mostly empty, save for a large party of SMU frat kids.

Someone said you also write for D Magazine, Teresa. Is Tim Rogers really as smarmy and sophomoric as he sounds on the FrontBurner blog?

Does that mean that Cuba Libre and La Duni will be even MORE crowded now (sighs)?

The inventory of nails in Samba Room's coffin-lid would not be complete without some mention of Laura Miller's arrogant, overreaching smoking-ban and the perfectly-predictable toll it took on this once-popular cigar-bar.
