Arlington police are searching for a man they refer to as the "Elmer Fudd robber." Apparently, he robbed the Albertsons Express at 6220 U.S. Highway 287 last Friday and is still on the loose. He wears a big orange hunting hat with flaps on the side. So if you know any grocery store robbers that look like Elmer Fudd, then call 817-469-8477 and collect $1,000 in reward money if the robber is caught.

IMPORTANT INFO regarding the "Elmer Fudd robber"!
Do not look for a guy that looks like Elmer Fudd!!!!!!!!!
Elmer Fudd is white, at least as far as a cartoon character can be said to be white.
The "Elmer Fudd robber" is a BLACK MAN who is wearing an "Elmer Fudd" style hunting hat.
He DOES NOT "look like Elmer Fudd"!!!!!
According to the Arlington Police Department:
http://www.crimeweb.net/details.asp?i...
Suspect Information * Black male 20 to 29 years old 5 feet, 7 inches tall Slender build Camouflage shorts Long white T-shirt Orange hunting hat with ear flaps, described as an
“Elmer Fudd” hat
If news organizations would just print FULL DETAILED descriptions of suspects, lives could be saved and crimes could be prevented!!!!! WHY do they describe everything about this criminal, focusing on a hat he in all likelihood REMOVED from his head instantly after this robbery, EXCEPT FOR THE ONE THING that he cannot remove, his RACE???????????
PC newsmedia bullsheeeot strikes again.
It is getting so bad that now when I read about a crime in the newspaper I usually go straight to the local PD's website so I can get a REAL AND ACCURATE description of the criminal.

Abraham, I'll agree that we (collectively) all jumped on to the Elmer Fudd thing too quickly -- but that's unfortunately probably the only way this story gets noticed.
For folks on the lookout, the perp looks like this:
But, there's some debate on ol' Elmer's race anyway. Here's an alternate view:

Thanks for your reply. My concern is that it is a matter of public safety. The race of ALL suspects should be mentioned in ALL crime stories, if at all possible.
You see, many criminals wear these clever and tricky things called "disguises" when they are in the process of committing a crime. The most ingenious thing about this "disguise" technique is that the criminal REMOVES THE "DISGUISE" shortly after the crime has been committed. I know, I know, this "disguise" thing, it sounds so far-fetched, like something out of Science Fiction, but it actually happens ALL THE TIME! AMAZING!

While I appreciate the necessity for accurate, detailed physical descriptions of criminal suspects, I would argue that the orange hunting cap on this suspect is not irrelevant, even though it is removable.
The subset of 20-something, small-framed black males who have owned such a cap is significantly smaller than the number of 20-something, small-framed black males who have never owned such a cap (unless these caps have, unbeknownst to me, become the latest fashion craze).
Funny hats are memorable. The merchant who sold the suspect that cap may remember the suspect and be able to identify him through sales records. An acquaintance of the suspect may remember seeing a similar item in his closet. While a disguise may be removable, I do not believe it is irrelevant.
Smaller, more insignificant pieces of evidence have been used to crack tough cases.

His race is much more relevant and significant than his hat. As a matter of public safety, people should be searching for a black man, not an Elmer Fudd hat. I am not a betting man (I think it is immoral) but I would be willing to bet $10 that the Elmer Fudd hat was thrown in a dumpster almost immediately after the robbery. This guy might be dumb, but I doubt he is dumb enough to carry his distinctive disguise around with him after it has been published all over the country. I guess you can always hope that he cannot read, so he does not get tipped off that people are looking for his had... there is actually a pretty good chance of that he can't read.

Gosh, this has been on the blog for about 90 minutes and no one has yet defended this poor child of color!

Wow, this story disappeared from your front page pretty fast after the above comments. I wonder why? People need to know about the "Elmer Fudd robber"! He is still at large! Don't you want people to be on the alert for the "Elmer Fudd robber" anymore? Or does the fact that he does not actually look like "Elmer Fudd" have anything to do with it? Someone could be killed by this comical funny-hatted armed robber! Put it back up on the front page!! It is a matter of PUBLIC SAFETY.

Abraham, I hate to disabuse you of your conspiracy theory re: positioning on our homepage. But one of the ways we keep this site running with so few people is a high degree of automation. Other than the "lead" stories (the ones with photos showing on the homepage), the other stories there are based on an algorithm of importance and recency. (And, if you are using The Daily You, your reading interests.) The story only moved because of newer, equally important stories hitting the page.
Now, perhaps we should have marked the story "updated" when adding the photo of the culprit-- that would have moved it up in the queue for a while.
Abraham, you've made some good points that have caused us to examine our process on crime stories.

I wonder how many hundreds of Robberies there were today. If this one did not look like a black Elmer Fudd, I suspect none of us would of heard of him. My goodness I do not think that Pegasus even ran the story about about the pretty blonde 9 year old abducted in Portrugal. The story was worth 5 minutes on the NBC nightly news a week after it happened. So let's pretend that it is the crime that matters and not what captures our attentions that matters in news Abraham. I have many choices in where I get my news. I choose Pegasus because it is the best news source for my blood pressure, and most stories are either entertaining or relevant to me personally. Keep it up Mike.

I have no conspiracy theories and I am not too concerned with what happens to pretty blonde 9 year olds in Portugal. I am more concerned with the safety of people in the Dallas-Fort Worth area because that is where I live. That is what is relevant to me. I am concerned about the safety of the woman in the crime-scene photo. I don't care whether she is black, asian, white, whatever. She was robbed by a criminal with a gun who is still at-large. Portugal is a long way away. Arlington is right around the corner. That is what is "relevant to me personally". Maybe you have never been attacked by a robber or some other kind of violent attacker before, but I have been attacked violently 5 times in my life by this type of chap so yes, it is very very "relevant to me personally". You seem more concerned about what is going on in Portugal than what is happening to your own neighbors in our area.
