Labor Day is fast approaching, and that means it’s time to retire those white Prada loafers for yet another season. And as you place your trusty footwear in a clear shoebox with the label outside in your glorious, cedar-lined, Elfa closet (God bless you, Container Store), don’t bother putting away the white linen pants just yet.
This year, we’re taking a stand against the “no white after Labor Day” lore as it’s only supposed to apply to shoes. So put on your best blanco britches and strut proudly to one of these events.
Funny Fella: Wayne Brady
August 29 - 30, 8:00 p.m.
He sings, he dances, he’s great at improv: is there nothing Wayne Brady can’t do? We hear he could even beat Michael Phelps in the 100 meter Butterfly while reading "A Tale of Two Cities;" he just doesn’t want to appear flashy. Ask him yourself as he performs this weekend as part of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Pop Series.
Tickets: $28 - $105; Morton H. Meyerson Center; www.dallassymphony.com
Meow Mixer: International Cat Show
August 30 - 31; beginning at 9:00 a.m.
How do you like your pussy? With long and shaggy hair or maybe something shorter that’s softer to the touch? Heck, maybe you’re the type who even likes the bald ones? You’re sure to find something in 12 rings of nonstop judging. And, PURRsonals.com, “the leading cats-only social networking Web site for both cat owners and their cat,” (coincidentally our fave new crazy-people Web site) hosts the Super Star Cat Photo Contest with categories like “Silly Silly Kitty” and “Most Expressive Tail.”
Tickets: $6 for adults; Arlington Convention Center; www.tica2008.com
Art Head Start: New Texas Talent – Closing Weekend
Through Saturday, August 30
It’s your last chance to discover a young, budding Texas artist before his work costs more than that Mercedes you were eyeing. Craighead-Green Gallery has pulled together works from 25 up-and-comers in a show curated by Julie Kronick, the corporate art curator for Neiman Marcus and our new best friend (she just doesn’t know it yet).

He Bangs, He Bangs: The Big Bang
Through Sunday, September 7
Cuties Gary Floyd and Doug Miller are back in the hilarious two-man musical The Big Bang where they play two up-and-coming composers pitching the world’s most expensive and over-the-top musical. In the process, the boys have to reenact every role from Adam & Eve to Christopher Columbus. Think Greater Tuna meets the History Channel.
Tickets: $20 - $30; Theatre Three; www.theatre3dallas.com
Let Me See That Belly Roll: Free Belly Dancing Lessons
Wednesday, September 3, 8:30 p.m.
Unfortunately, a little too much summer indulgence (AKA drinking margaritas, eating chips and salsa and laying by the pool) has left us with a little more belly than we would prefer. Luckily, Al Amir Dallas is offering free belly dancing lessons, and we plan to be there shaking it like Shakira until we’re at least 10 pounds lighter, or until our spine gives out (paging Dr. Peay). Whichever comes first! Hip scarves are provided and professional dancers perform after the class.
