Swift Tracks: Oso Closo and The Backsliders

Everyone seems to miss the classic rock bands that were so huge in the 80s and 90s, which is possibly why they are all conducting a reunion tour or making a new album. Oso Closo helps bring those sounds back, but with a slight twist.

Oso Closo is made up of the typical guitarists, bassist, vocals, piano and drums. The way they write the guitar chords takes you back to big hair and crazy rock stars. But they use the piano in an alternative sort of way, making a cohesive sound that seems to work.

Oso’s ballad “Sheila” helps show their classic rock preference. The way in which they repeat the woman’s name makes you think it would be on of those archetypal CDs compiled with old ballads and love songs. But the way they use the piano really sets them apart from the have-been rock bands.

Lead singer Adrian Hulet's voice stands out from typical rock singers’ pitch and sound. Hearing his range helps you understand that he could definitely do more with his talent.

They will be playing at Andy’s Bar in Denton tomorrow, and at Lola’s in Fort Worth on July 11.

The Backsliders are also apart of the rock genre, but on a totally different level. They mix a little bit of rock, power pop, and dare I say it, doowop.

The Backsliders' female lead singer, Kim Pendelton, also possesses a very confident voice. She doesn’t necessarily sound like Lisa Loeb, but certain types of songs and the way she hits some notes remind me of her. At some points in the song, “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” her rawness conveys more of a rock mode. This could help the band have more versatility in the future.

Their lyrics are simple and straight to the point, which is what a lot of fans seem to like. Having songs that are easy to sing along with is a strong selling point for them.

Several influences listed on their MySpace are English bands, which explains their unique sound. Much of their success seems predicated on the fact that they stand out from the rest.

Their next show will be on June 28 at The Moon.
