Weekend events — May 9-11, 2008

Boring Weekend Disorder is a growing epidemic among non-Gay List Daily readers. Symptoms include: staying home on both Friday and Saturday night, ordering in bad Chinese Food, going to bed by 10 p.m. and petting Mr. Whiskers until he has bald spots. Luckily, there are simple steps to overcoming this debilitating disease. We recommend getting gussied up, sporting a cute new outfit and enjoying one of the fabulous events below (and maybe a few cocktails). Side effects can include lamp shades on heads, skull-splitting hangovers and, in rare cases, nameless strangers in the bed the next morning.

When Raven Speaks (Opening Reception)

Friday, May 9, 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Hopefully this raven doesn’t say “Never More” to the art of Beverly Winters. Check out her array of work including everything from pastels and acrylics to pen-n-inks and watercolors. It’s definitely something to crow about.

Texas Visual Arts Association Gallery; www.tvaa.org/TVAADowntownGallery/MAYg.html

Urban Street Bazaar

Saturday, May 10, 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Usually the term “urban” conjures up visions of concrete jungles and bustling city life. But adding the word “bazaar” to it makes us think of knit scarves and pottery ashtrays. Maybe it means you should bring your switchblade and matching switchblade cozy to this day of craft vendors, car show, live acoustic music and the “Project Make” Fashion Show.

Free admission; Bishop Arts District, Dallas; www.urbanstreetbazaar.com

Dallas Roars at the Dallas Zoo

Saturday & Sunday, May 10-11

Get ready for lions and tigers and bears (oh my), as well as a live butterfly release, a stingray touch tank and a plant sale (Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – noon only). For those feeling very fashion forward on this day, might we recommend a pith helmet and monocle to complete the ensemble?

Admission: $8.75 Adults, $5.75 Children (ages 3 -11); Dallas Zoo; www.dallasroars.com

Kathleen Madigan

Saturday, May 10, 9:00 p.m.

The funny lady from Leno and Letterman is bringing her ha-ha to Dallas. With the elections coming up, she probably has some new zingers to add to her collection of jabs. Just make sure not to heckle her, or that razor-sharp wit might be used on you!

Tickets: $37.50 and up; Lakewood Theatre; www.lakewoodtheater.com

Dolly Parton

Sunday, May 11, 8:00 p.m.

The big-busted diva is back after her rescheduled March appearance brought on by back problems? Hmmm, what could have caused Dolly Parton to have back pain? We have two guesses. But who cares, she’s back and that means it’s time for a “Jolene” sing-a-long.

Tickets: $40 - $115; Nokia Theater; www.nokialivedfw.com
