Pegasus News Week in View: Aaagh-Ike! edition

Since you're probably inside battening down the hatches for Ike's visit to Texas, this is as good a time as any to catch up with your local friends who are on PegNews (or who should be). Meantime, we'll be keeping up with any event cancellations / reschedules and would appreciate any scoop you can share on that front.

The Race for President: 1960 this Wednesday at The Sixth Floor Museum

Metro: Erin investigated the need and options for water recycling in the Barnett Shale. Meantime, Steve-O says the drilling marches on without a plan, paddle or clue ... Minnie, who continues in her mission to interview and profile every top government official in the region, blitzed Allen this week, catching up with the fire chief, police chief and Parks & Rec director ... Confused about the new animal ordinances? Need more convenience? You can now speed up your neighborhood sidewalk repair by paying for it yourself ... Laura S. debuted the first photo-riffic installment of our "downtown showdown" ... Grits for Breakfast thinks that with an untapped rainy day fund, Dallas County's budget woes are a manufactured crisis ... [Insert weekly Farmers Branch immigration brouhaha here.] ... There was no discussion of Cesar Chavez or Ross Avenue. None.

Stage: The Column's John Garcia loves Lyric Stage's West Side Story ... Mark-Brian Sonna loves I Hate Hamlet ... In the Spotlight: Christina Vela & Jonathan Taylor, the directors of The Pillowman at Kitchen Dog.

Flix: On Friday, look for reviews of Burn After Reading (good); Righteous Kill (less so); The Women (even less so); and Surfer, Dude (my god, don't even ask) on the Movies tab.

Music: Is something funny going on at Bend Studio? ... The Dallas Symphony welcomed its new CEO and music director ... Brenna caught the Maroon 5 / Counting Crows show ... One EdgeFest just isn't enough.

Best Bites: [Insert weekly restaurant closing stories here, here and here.] But there is new blood, at least in Legacy, Downtown Dallas (x2) and Victory ... Vern's Place is dead. Long live Vern's Kitchen.

Game: Our college football teams all take on BCS foes this weekend ... Duncanville Today says that local Olympic boxer Luis Yanez is ready for the pros ... Start planning the Superbowl parade, or at least for the Cowboys' new roadside rescue business ... The Cupcheck delves into Sean Avery's Hollywood career.

Schools: No wonder our kids aren't so good at the mathematics: The DISD had a $64 million oops, while Lancaster is spending thousands of dollars to investigate the superintendent's financial management. Not great info to arm local officials knocking on doors to lure truants back to class Things even look dim in one of the area's richest, most-lauded districts, according to The Collin County Observer.

Bidness: Area businesses have been recognized for their gay-friendliness while American Airlines gets props from Hispanics ... Williamedia isn't impressed with websites trying to lure us downtown ... Dallas and Fort Worth newspapers team up? The media biz has gotten crazy.

• Country great Dale Watson is at Pearl's.
• A reunited Chomsky is at the Double Wide.

Saturday

• Music, food and art on the streets at the All About Uptown Festival, featuring the likes of Brave Combo and the Killdares.
• Or, if sausage on the streets is more your speed catch the Italian Street Festival in the West End.
• Spune hosts its annual back to school show and cookout at Lolas with lots of great local bands.
• Or, for a similar deal on the 214-side, check out the Method Mayhem BBQ
• A new DIY Punk club is opening at the OhLook Performing Arts Center in Grapevine(?!).

Sunday, Sunday, SUNDAY

• Appropriately enough, Waterfest is this weekend at Lake Lewisville (Saturday too).
• Excitement, thy name is Quiltmania.
• The Latino Cultural Center hosts the 71st annual Fiestas Patrias.
• For Fiestas Patrias in Fort Worth, catch Family Fun Day at the Amon Carter Museum.
• Seemingly everybody's darling Somebody's Darling celebrates their CD release.

Bonus Monday recommendations: If you're watching the Cowboys beat the Eagles, pick up a $1 Cheesesteak. If not, John Hiatt / Joan Osborne at Nokia is a rare Monday night treat.
