Two restaurants in Dallas -- Alessio's in East Dallas and Scene in downtown Dallas -- both closed on Saturday June 28, informing their customers via email of their closures.
Both restaurants had been plagued by rumors of closures for months. Alessio's proximity to Jimmy's Food Market didn't offset the lousy location that scared off the Highland Park blue-hairs he cultivated.
Scene fought the losing battle that is the reality of trying to have a high-end restaurant in downtown Dallas, although its sibling restaurant, Fuse, has managed to survive.

My boss has an office in the Mosaic, and he told everyone to eat at the Mexican place across the street. Said the food at Scene was not good.

NOVE and NINE at Victory Park are next. They're supposed to close in July unless Perot takes them over.
Urban retail/restaurants will never survive without people "living" nearby. Victory Park was supposed to deliver 4,000 new residential units - they've only completed about 600.
It's the same downtown - without the +10,000 residents everyone talks about, retail will be almost impossible without public subsidy. Public Market won't stay open when their subsidy runs out.

If they want to keep something open it needs to appeal to the local downtown residents. They should revamp the theme into more of a diner, add some pool tables golden tee, some couches, put a small stage in the corner etc. The locals only have plenty of high end places to choose from, very few laid back bar/pub places. You have City Tavern and to a lesser extent Ten sports grill...it's gotten kinda gunky and you have to endure the music selection from the 20 something bartenders.

Nancy at D reports that chef Blaine Staniford and manager Michael Bratcher have now left Fuse. i guess this is as good a time as any to post an email that Staniford sent after the whole hoo-ha over the closure of Scene, as follows:
"I apologize for any inconvenience caused for D Magazine by the closing of Scene. I appreciate all of the press your magazine has given Fuse and Scene over the past several years. The closing of a restaurant or any other business can happen very quickly and with virtually no notice to owners or employees. In this particular instance I was not in the country when it happened and found out when I returned at the beginning of this week. As everyone is aware, the cost of running a business or even a home in a waning economy can be very difficult. It is also difficult to determine how much of a cost increase will be passed on by purveyors due to a very large increase in fuel costs. At this time, I would like to reassure you and the bloggers Scene and Fuse pay their bills. This information is an effort to give you and your readers an apology. There really is no excuse for the behavior other than advertising and public support was not the foremost thought at the time. I appreciate all of our past, current, and future customers.

According to Eats, Alessio Franceschetti has a job as "chef-consultant" at Gordo's, a Park Cities place that's set to re-open soon. given the colorful nature of the personalities involved (including Gordo's owner George Bakhshmandi), that's going to be fascinating to watch
