Don't fret about the cost of gas this three-day weekend; we've got information on all the holiday events near you. Nor do you need to wait for July 4th to watch fireworks. Here's a look at some of the highlights:
Thursday More than 20 years ago, Addison found an excuse to get a captive audience to start drinking on the 3rd with Kaboom Town. Since then Southlake, Coppell, Sachse and Sunnyvale have followed suit. You can bet on the ponies at Lone Star Park before watching Grand Prairie's display or see stars at Sundance Square's free screening of Apollo 13. And if you're proud to be an American and have the documentation to prove it, you're welcome to watch sparks fly in Farmers Branch. The W is offering a distant view of all these from the 33rd floor Ghostbar with DJs and guestroom specials.
Friday, July 4 (Independence Day) Big D is putting its money behind the Fair Park display. You can browse all events or find something near you (or your planned BBQ).
Saturday, July 5 Arlington's hometown fireworks show is among the last but not least. If auto racing is more your speed, you can have both in Mesquite. To celebrate the uniquely American art form of jazz, head to South Side's Brooklyn. Grapevine celebrates reds and whites made in the U.S.A. The two-day Trinity River Fiesta also wraps up in the West End.

The Trains at NorthPark Oh, no! Godzilla got into the Northpark train exhibit! But don't worry, the engineers will have it back up and running in time for your mall visit. And now, BEFORE the big holiday rush, is the best time to see them, before hundreds of drooling children take over the enclosure after Thanksgiving. More info

Actually fireworks start a month early in the DFW area.
Every year in early June the little suburb of Highland Village puts on Their "Red White and Blue" festival.
We discovered it a few years ago when we were looking for something to do on a Saturday night and found a listing somewhere that Joe Ely was playing a concert on Lake Lewisville, for free no less.
This year it was on June 3rd and featured Reckless Kelly, who thoroughly killed.
Show up at 8 pm and you get a free concert followed by a twenty minute fireworks display that easily rivals Addison's. And as a bonus you can park in one of their designated lots a mile away and they shuttle you to the grounds on a school bus.
